Decorate With Plants

By: Curtis Reddehase

Houseplants can be a great quick and inexpensive decorating tool. Not only are they very pretty, they also help keep the indoor environment clean, helping in oxygen/carbon dioxide exchange. So why are so many people having such a hard time keeping plants alive? Some plants require a lot of work and different types of lighting that is almost impossible to accommodate. Knowing what types of plants are best for your situation is key to being a successful indoor plant owner. If you travel a lot or have a busy schedule, which most of us do a plant that requires very little watering and low to normal light is going to be the best option for you? A good plant that is normally inexpensive and easy to maintain is an Ivy. Ivys come in many different forms and will continue to grow with light. They even do well with florescent light. They do not however, do well with direct sunlight. They require very little water, in fact if you saturate the entire pot and keep it moist it will do just fine. Another great thing about having Ivys as house plants, they will root very easy in water making it easy to pot the roots in soil and keep adding them to your collection. Another great plant to add to your collection is an Aloe Vera plant. Aloe Vera is best known for the plump leaves filled with a gel like substance. The inside of the leaves can be used on cuts and burns to sooth the aching spot. This plant can be watered as little as every two or three weeks and need very little light. If you cut a piece of the leaf off to use, it will just grow back. Not only is Aloe Vera useful, they are also easy to grow. This is another great plant for people with a busy schedule. If you want a little more color, a Rubber Plant features leaves that often darken to a deep burgundy and have a glossy look. Depending on the lighting conditions the color may vary. If the light exposure is low to medium the leaves will most likely stay greenish in color with medium to bright light they will start to turn into a dark burgundy color. The best watering for this type of plant is to let it completely dry out in between watering. So they require watering just a few times a month. This plant is not only easy to maintain, it also provides very nice color with the right light. A lot of times we often give up on house plants because they keep dying. If you know what types of plants are best for your lifestyle you can be successful at growing plants in your home and decorating with them. These are just a few examples of plants that are very easy to care for and can be found at your local nursery for a reasonable amount. Next time you’re out looking for a good plant it’s wise for you do some research and check with the nursery for some other good options.
