What are the Different Kinds of Split-Level Houses?

By: david

Split-level houses are houses that have one part of the house with a floor level which is halfway between the floor and ceiling of the other area of the house. The section that has only one story usually has a family room or a living room, a dining room and a kitchen. There are also two sets of stairs which connect the one-story section to the two-story section of the house. One of the sets of stairs leads up to the bedrooms and bathrooms, while the other set leads down to the large family room and the basement area. Typically, the basement level would include the garage and is also level with the driveway. The house’s first floor is constructed halfway between the basement and the second floor. Alternately, the two halves of a split-level house could also have two stories, with a basement underneath the first story. Additions to the house can also be made through the outward expansion of any of the sides or through the construction of a third floor on top of the first. There are many types of split-level houses. Here are some of them.

1. The Bi-Level of Split Foyer

This type of split-level house has two short sets of staircases and two levels. The entryway is located between floors and the front door opens up to a landing. A short flight of stairs would lead up to a top floor while another short flight of stairs would be leading down. The lower floor usually has a low ceiling and can be partially below the ground. On the other hand, the top floor has higher ceilings and houses the living room, the dining room, the kitchen, along with the bedrooms and the bathrooms. However, in a lot of modern Asheville split foyer houses, the lower level is positioned at grade, and so an outdoor staircase is needed to be able to reach the front door. These kinds of split-level houses also have high ceilings in the lower level so that the HVAC ducting of the home could be accommodated.

2. Stacked Split Level

Another type of split-level house is the stacked split level. This type has around four or five sets of stairs and around five or more levels. Its entry is located on a middle floor that is between two levels. Its front door typically opens up into a foyer and the there would be two short staircases that would be leading down to the basement and to some kind of living room or kitchen. The other living area is located on the top of the foyer and another short staircase would be leading to at least one bedroom and this is located above the first living area. The additional bedrooms are constructed in such a way that they are stacked above the second living area, giving its name. This kind of construction is usually applied for townhouses.

3. Split Level

Split levels usually have around two or three staircases and around three or four stories. Its entry is located on some kind of a middle floor which is positioned between two floors. Its front door would be opening directly to what is typically the formal living area. The mid-level floor has the living room, the dining room, the kitchen and has a short staircase that leads up to the bedrooms, along with another short staircase that leads down to the informal living areas and probably into the garage.

4. Split Entry

This type of Asheville split-level house usually has two or three short staircases, along with around three or four levels. The entry is also located between floors and the front door opens up to a foyer or to an entry area that is located in a wing that is off the main house. There would be a short staircase from the entry that would bring you to the top floor and a short staircase that leads down. Although this type may resemble a split-level or a three-level from its exterior, it actually is a bi-level house with an entry wing.
